The construction of the house began in the Ming Dynasty. The Southern Ming Dynasty established its Grand Court in the building in the 2nd year of of the reign of Emperor Shun Zhi of the Qing Dynasty. Lin Congyi bought the house during the reign of Emperor Dao Guang. Covering an area of 3,000㎡, the residence is composed of three buildings side by side. One of the main buildings has four compounds. The residence has a large garden at the eastern side. It was one of the grandest mansions in Fuzhou in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and was, designated in 2006 as one of the 6th group of key cultural relics under state protection.
Lin Congyi (1824-1878), born in Houguan County (present Fuzhou), was the second son of Lin Zexu. After being his father’s attendant for a long time, he was appointed Acting Chief Judge of Zhejiang Province and later as an official in charge of rectifying coastal armed forces in Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Huzhou cities.
