The house was built in the reign of Emperor Jia Qing of the Qing Dynasty with an area of 525square meters and was rebuilt in the reign of Emperor Guang Xu and in early 20th century. With a compact and functional layout, the residence is composed of two compounds with a small parlour at the western side. Fruit trees and flowers were thriving on a perfectly mown carpet of lawn at the front courtyard. A stone inscribed with “He Meisheng’s Epitaph’ was erected under one of the blossoming trees.
He Zhendai (1867-1952), designated name Meisheng, was born in Houguang County (present Fuzhou). He was an Imperial Scholar in the reign of Emperor Guang Xu of the Qing Dynasty and a poet of “Tong Guang” School from Fujian Province. He presided over the revision of “The Chronicle of West Lake” and the compilation of “The General History of Fujian”.
The house was announced as an official protection site by Fuzhou Municipal Government in 1991.
