The house was the former site of the study of Xu Ouxiang (also known as Xu You), Huang Ren’s maternal grandfather. Huang used to study here in his childhood. In the 9th year of the reign of Emperor Yong Zheng, the Qing Dynasty6 (1731), after he retired from political life, Huang renovated the house and lived there in seclusion. Occupying an area of 815 square metres, the house was named Xiangcao Yan (“Vanilla Study” )because of the fragrant and beautiful vanilla orchid and bamboo plants charmingly dominating the courtyard. Huang had a hobby of collecting ink slabs. He once bought ten ink slabs and stocked them in the study, hence the name “Ten Ink Slab Study”.
The house was announced as an official protection site by Fuzhou Municipal Government in 1991.
