Built in the early Ming Dynasty, this house is one of the oldest architectures in Fuzhou. In the reign of the Emperor Jia Jing of the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Jing, a well-known general against Japanese pirates, moved there from Hong Tang Town in the western suburbs. He renovated the house and named it “ Chang shu li”(Minister’s Residence’). ” Facing south, the main building was originally composed of three compounds with parlours on both sides, with the area of 2,675 square metres. It was announced as an official protection site by Fuzhou Municipal Government in 1991.
Zhang Jing (1492-1555), born in Hong Tang Town, Houguan County (now Fuzhou), was an Imperial Scholar in the 12th year of the reign of Emperor Zheng De, Ming Dynasty (1517). In the 33rd year of the reign of Emperor Jia Jing, Ming Dynasty (1554), Zhang Jing commanded all the armies from the south and the north coastal areas of the Yangtze River, Zhejiang, Shandong, Fujian, Hunan and Guangdong Provinces to fight against the Japanese pirates and won great victories.
