Residence of Guo Family in Huang Xiang (Yellow St.)

    The construction of the residence began in the late Ming Dynasty. It used to be the government office. Guo Baiyin bought it over and renovated it in the year of the reign of Emperor Tong Zhi of the Qing Dynasty. It is composed of three compounds and a garden at the eastern side, with a total area of 2,130㎡. The building was designated as one of the 6th group of cultural relics under provincial protection in 2005.

    Guo Baiyin (1807-1884) was an Imperial Scholar in the 12th year of the reign of Emperor Dao Guang (1823), Qing Dynasty. He started as an intern and editor-in-chief at the Hanlin Academy, which advised the Emperor and helped him to draft documents, and worked his way up through Governor General of Guangxi Province, Hubei Province and Acting Governor General of Hunan and Guangdong Provinces. His father Guo Jiesan had five sons and all of them passed imperial examinations and were appointed to high-ranking officials.
